Delivery Style Overview

Which delivery style is most beneficial for your care organisation?

When organising the staff training that is appropriate for your organisation, one of the first considerations should be the style used to deliver the course content. Which learning environment will mean that your staff have the best chance to retain knowledge and make the training effective? There are lots of options that should be considered in order to find the best training for your staff and also for the organisation.

Below is a list of advantages and disadvantages of 3 delivery styles so that you can review how you currently organise your training and possibly find greater efficiencies. The 3 delivery styles analysed are; On site Face to Face Taught Courses, eLearning and Silver Box Learning.

Advantages of on site Face to Face courses:

Sharing Best Practise – These Face to Face sessions allow not only our trainer to share their knowledge on a subject, but they facilitate an environment whereby your staff can share ideas and knowledge, relating to your service users and care environment.

Organisation – A trainer attends your care setting to deliver the courses, so your staff won’t have the hassle or expense of travelling and are likely to be familiar with equipment and your specific person centred approach. The subjects are chosen by you and therefore relevant to your training requirements.

Knowledge Retention – Recognised for having a distinct impact on the knowledge retention, Face to Face Courses utilise lots of different learning styles (visual, auditory & kinesthetic) within the same session to allow your staff to engage and retain in the subject matter.

Considerations for on site Face to Face courses:

Rota Patterns – It can become quite difficult to book a Face to Face training session and still have enough staff to offer the care throughout the day, which means that the time required to deliver a training course can often become prohibitive. Often care managers will utilise staff days off in order to meet their training requirements.

Poor Attendance – Due to the investment involved in this type of delivery style, if a member of staff misses a session, then that presents a care manager with a serious challenge of reaching compliance as that session normally cannot be rebooked for a very small number of staff at a cost effective rate.

Facilities – The environment needs to be relaxing and conducive to learning. Some care settings (often community care) would struggle to spare a room large enough for a group of learners to congregate. Another consideration is that if staff are on site and are needed on shift, the training can potentially be disturbed.

Advantages of eLearning:

Learning Management System – The eLearning has a suite of reporting tools within the package and will automate your entire training matrix, not just those courses delivered through eLearning. This will allow you to monitor and improve your compliance.

Accessibility – The eLearning has been developed so that it can be reached via most web browsers and most handheld devices, we have even created an app so that your staff can access their training in a way that suits them.

Remove Barriers – We have developed a series of tools within the eLearning that will help with potential language barriers by offering a translation tool for approx. 200 languages. We have also developed colour coding that will help those with Dyslexia.

Considerations for eLearning:

Multiple Choice – The system relies on a series of multiple choice questions to be completed, this can make the training very straight forward for some, potentially too easy for others.  

Practical Skills – eLearning can be very useful to cover theoretical topics very efficiently, however it is highly unlikely that the inspectorate would be content if all subjects are covered by eLearning, so you will have to come up for an alternatively delivery style for subjects such as First Aid and Manual Handling.

IT Dependent – The eLearning can be completed across a multitude of devises and even complete via a mobile device app, however some of your staff may not be happy to depend on modern technology for the entirety of their training.

Advantages of Silver Box Learning:

Constant Access – The Silver Box has been designed so that once you have a license to use the system, then you will actually hold all of the training material on site. This means that you can deliver the staff training as and when you see fit and will easily allow you to maintain consistently high levels of care.

Flexibility – The courses can be completed by an individual, as easily as it can be delivered to a small discussion group. This allows you to gear your training up to suit your staffs learning styles without having extra hassle or expense.

Quality – Accredited by the CPD, the Silver Box structure requires that learners complete qualitative answers that will not only act as a learning resource for the individual, but will also act as a audit trail for the organisation. The courses are marked by a team of specialist markers that have exacting standards and will offer you a safeguard against low levels of learner engagement.

Considerations for Silver Box Learning:

Training Coordinator – Due to the nature of the training, we often find that our clients will have an individual within the organisation that acts as a training co-ordinator, making sure that the training matrix is up to date and all staff are compliant.

Traceability – If you allow your staff to complete the workbooks individually, then there will be a question on whether the member of staff is completing them as they should be, or whether they are sourcing external assistance. We ask for qualitative answers, so hand writing alone would be enough to determine if it is your staff completing the courses.

English Language – The Silver Box requires your staff to have a basic understanding of English and will not cater very well for learners that experience dyslexia. Having said that as the staff will be working under the CQC, then the courses would allow them to practice their reading and writing skills prior to having to complete official reports and documents within your organisation.
