Why Many Care Providers Find Blended Learning Works Best

Training and development are essential features in every well-run and compliant care provider. For management teams the challenge is to balance efficiency (time and cost) with effectiveness to ensure that staff are consistently equipped with the skills they need.

Online learning platforms such as eBox have opened opportunities to deliver care training in a flexible and cost-effective way. But sometimes a different approach such as Silver Box distance learning or remote face-to-face training might be more appropriate.

Every organisation and team is unique, so we’d never attempt to issue a definitive list of what training style to use and when. But here are the considerations that typically come up when we discuss training and development plans with care managers.

Before we get into that, it’s worth recapping the features and benefits of the three main course formats.

Face-to-Face

These days, face-to-face courses are mostly delivered remotely using online meeting tools. You still get the group learning dynamic and the opportunity to interact and share experiences with an experienced tutor and other delegates, you just don’t need to travel.

Events are live, so you need to block out the time and you need a quiet and private space for the learning to take place.

Silver Box

With a Silver Box licence, you have full control of the training materials onsite. You can deliver the training when it’s convenient and people can learn individually or in groups. Learners are assessed through qualitative answers that are assessed externally by specialist Redcrier markers.

eBox

These courses are delivered and assessed entirely online (via a browser or an App) and can be taken at any time. The software remembers which courses staff members need and will send reminders at the relevant intervals. The flexibility of the training delivery and the automated management and reporting tools mean that many providers choose this format as the foundation of their training and compliance.

Why Flexibility Adds Value

People have different preferred learning styles. So a single-track approach is unlikely to meet everyone’s needs.

Also, different subjects lend themselves to different delivery styles. For example, First Aid is best delivered face-to-face so learners benefit from practical and physical involvement in the subject matter and get an understanding of what might be required of them under pressure in an emergency situation.

Some subjects, such as mental health, safeguarding, equality and diversity, are nuanced. Different scenarios might not have simple yes/no answers. A face to face or workshop style of delivery is highly effective in these circumstances.

Written distance learning courses can be a good way to draw out and assess deeper levels of learning. This can be helpful if a staff member wants to develop and demonstrate expertise in a specific aspect of care, or by proving strong attributes through Supervisory Skills to enhance a career in care. Silver Box can add an extra dimension to the learning and assessment. Data protection is a typical example where a written style of training can be effective and give a care provider a clear audit trail of proven knowledge retention

Aims And Priorities

Normally the best combination of delivery styles comes down to what you’re trying to achieve and your priorities. Factors that come into play include whether the subject is new to the learners or aimed at refreshing skills and knowledge. Perhaps you’re trying to assess competence as part of a recruitment or probation process.

What you’re trying to achieve is always the starting point for the discussion. Once we’re clear about the aims and priorities, we can work together to design the best blend of training styles and courses to meet the needs of your organisation and your team.
