The Real Cost of Pressure Sores to care homes

Pressure SoresThe treatment of pressure sores costs the NHS more than £3.8 million every day. It’s estimated that between 4%-10% of all patients admitted to hospital will develop at least one pressure sore. Although this is not a subject that you may hear talked about very often, it is clearly an area of medical treatment that needs to be taken seriously.

‘Stop the Pressure’ is just one of many campaigns that have been launched as an ambition to make life better for patients receiving care. They have reported that 80-95% of pressure sores are preventable. But this does beg the question; what can and should be done to prevent them?

Raising awareness of this issue and providing education is beginning to help carers take more preventable measures when caring for patients, and in turn can assist in keeping the cost of reactive treatment down. There are many simple steps that can be taken to prevent and treat pressure sores, one concept is known as SSKIN; Surface, Skin Inspection, Keep your patients moving, Incontinence/Moisture, Nutrition/ Hydration.

As pointed out, education and training are the key factors when it comes to providing the correct and appropriate care for patients who could suffer from pressure sores. This is often a widespread and underestimated medical condition and the training has moved on in terms of how to effectively and pro actively manage the treatment of pressure sores. It is also recognised that it can be difficult for busy care staff to complete new training as time is often lacking to fit training between alternating care shifts.

To accommodate this, Redcrier offers a range of courses which are not only introducing the newest ideas but also flexible for care staff to complete. This includes a course purposely designed to outline the awareness of pressure sores; Pressure Sores Awareness & Prevention. The course teaches carers how to recognise, prevent and correctly treat pressure sores.
