Do you know the facts behind Dementia?

Dementia care and course Dementia is now one of the biggest health issues facing our country. It is estimated that this year there will be 850,000 people with Dementia in the UK with this number predicted to increase to 1 million in the UK by 2025. With this amount of people currently suffering with the disease and this alarming prediction for the future there’s bound to be a knock on effect on resources. Of course, these resources don’t only come in the form of cost to the country but also consider the resources behind the people caring for those affected, whether it’s the number of carers available, their time, or their skill sets.

It’s hardly surprising to learn that currently there are around 670,000 carers for people with Dementia in the UK and the financial cost of this disease to the UK is £26 billion per annum even with family carers of Dementia sufferers saving the UK £11 billion a year.  With the Dementia numbers looking like they will continue to rise there is going to be a need to reassess current services and resources to establish their suitability. With greater intensity of care provision means investment will be needed for the right training and skill development.

Ensuring you have the right training and understanding to care for someone with this disease is extremely important as there are many different types and stages of Dementia and like any disease every individual handles it in a different way.
